Check the AC (Abrasion Class) rating. AC3 is the minimum for residential use, while AC4 provides added durability for high-traffic areas. AC5 is designed for commercial spaces.
Evaluate the thickness. Laminate ranges from 6mm to 14mm. Thicker laminate feels more solid underfoot, reduces noise, and generally performs better long-term. For a quality feel, 10mm or thicker is recommended.
Consider the underlayment. Some laminate products include attached padding, while others require a separate underlayment. Quality underlayment improves comfort, reduces noise transmission, and provides minor leveling of subfloor imperfections.
Understand that laminate cannot be refinished. Unlike hardwood, damaged laminate planks must be replaced. However, quality laminate is so durable that refinishing is rarely needed within its expected lifespan of 15 to 25 years.
