Sweep or vacuum your hardwood floors regularly using a soft-bristle broom or a vacuum with a hardwood floor setting (beater bar turned off). Grit and debris act like sandpaper, dulling the finish over time.
Clean with a manufacturer-recommended hardwood floor cleaner. Avoid excessive water, steam mops, vinegar, and wax-based products, which can damage the finish or leave residue. Damp mop only when necessary, using a well-wrung mop.
Maintain consistent indoor humidity levels between 35 and 55 percent. Use humidifiers in winter and dehumidifiers or air conditioning in summer to prevent excessive expansion and contraction of the wood.
Use felt pads under all furniture legs and replace them regularly. Place mats at all exterior entrances and area rugs in high-traffic zones. Avoid wearing high heels or cleats on hardwood floors.
Refinishing restores hardwood floors to like-new condition. Most solid hardwood can be refinished 3 to 5 times during its lifetime. Signs that refinishing is needed include visible scratches through the finish, gray or discolored wood, and worn areas where the finish has been stripped.
