Proper subfloor preparation is essential for a successful hardwood installation. The subfloor must be clean, dry, level (within 3/16 inch over 10 feet), and structurally sound. Moisture testing is performed to ensure conditions are within acceptable ranges.

Nail-down installation is the most common method for solid hardwood over wood subfloors. Each board is blind-nailed through the tongue at an angle using a pneumatic flooring nailer. This method creates a secure, traditional installation.

Glue-down installation is used for engineered hardwood over concrete subfloors. A moisture-resistant adhesive is spread on the concrete, and planks are pressed into the adhesive. This method provides excellent stability and sound reduction.

Floating installation involves clicking engineered planks together over an underlayment without attaching them to the subfloor. This method is fast, clean, and ideal for installations over radiant heat or where nail-down is not feasible.

After installation, expansion gaps are maintained around the room's perimeter and covered with baseboard molding. Transition strips are installed where hardwood meets other flooring types or at doorway thresholds.
