Luxury Vinyl Plank vs. Laminate Flooring: Which Is Right for Your Home?

Luxury Vinyl Plank vs. Laminate Flooring: Which Is Right for Your Home?

Luxury vinyl plank and laminate flooring look remarkably similar and occupy similar price points. But important differences in construction, performance, and best-use scenarios can help you make the right choice.

Water resistance is the biggest differentiator. LVP is 100 percent waterproof, making it suitable for bathrooms, kitchens, basements, and laundry rooms. Laminate is water-resistant but not waterproof; prolonged moisture exposure can cause swelling and damage.

Underfoot feel differs notably. LVP is slightly softer and warmer, with natural give that reduces fatigue during extended standing. Laminate feels harder and can produce more sound when walked on.

Durability varies by product, but both offer excellent scratch and dent resistance for their price range. LVP's wear layer protects against scratches, while laminate's aluminum oxide overlay resists abrasion.

Installation methods are similar (both use click-lock floating systems), but LVP is generally easier to cut and work with. LVP can also handle more subfloor imperfection without telegraphing.
